About the Course and Workshop

The rising costs of health care and the need to improve quality care have driven the widespread adoption of health information technology by governments and health care providers in the private and public sectors.  The operational transformation process has also generated a demand for a new generation of IT workforce that will be required to have sufficient domain knowledge to understand how IT can be applied to all areas of healthcare operations in an enterprise-wide setting.  In order for IT professionals to stay competitive and relevant in a new healthcare work environment, IT skills alone are not enough.   The IT professional working in a healthcare setting today would be required to understand basic and recent advances in computer and info-communications technology in health and medicine.  How are hospitals exploiting health information systems and tools to deliver cost-effective and efficient care?  How can HIT help care providers to deliver better and safer patient care?  How are patients benefiting from better quality of care through IT innovations?  How do we comprehend quality measures and standards from the use of these tools?  Most importantly, how do we measure the impact of these initiatives have on patient health, outcomes and cost?

The Course (from Tuesday, 12 August to Thursday, 14 August 2008) will enable participants to acquire health IT domain knowledge to fulfill the following educational objectives:

  • know and appreciate the multiple facets of health information technology applications

  • learn and understand the key issues and challenges in HIT deployment in healthcare

  • discover the many career opportunities offered by HIT in healthcare and healthcare-related industries

  • network with Health IT interest groups and resources at the local, regional and international levels

The Workshop (on Friday, 15 August 2008) is to provide a forum for participants to interact with experts in the implementation of IT systems in healthcare and to share experience in organizational initiatives in health IT transformation.

The Workshop will focus on the following organizational initiatives in health IT transformation:

  • leadership and strategic planning

  • business and financial management

  • process engineering and improvement

  • roadmap for health IT transformation and implementation

Participants who take the 3-day Course and then go onto the final 1-day Workshop will particularly benefit from knowledge acquired from the Course to  better appreciate the issues and challenges in the formulation of the roadmap for organizational  health IT transformation to be discussed at the Workshop.

Site visits - the 1-day Workshop will culminate in site visits to view live demos of healthcare IT systems implemented at Changi General Hospital.  Led by Professor Low Cheng Ooi, CGH Chief Medical Officer and his team of clinical and IT specialists, the demos will feature an exciting range of state-of-the-art patient care and management systems at CGH.
